Oh wait, that was last week with the hayrides. *face palm*
This week I really wanted to focus on a guy that I'm no longer in touch with but meant a great deal to 5 year old Heather.
His name was Gary and he was our Pastor.
It's not really planned that this also follows Veteran's Day, but it works out splendidly. You see, my dad's a Vet. He spent 18.5 years in the US Army and when I was around 5 years old he was deployed in the first Iraq war. That's actually how we ended up in Tampa the first time around.
Anyway, while he was away I was at that pivotal age where lots of things were happening and I needed a father figure.
One time I specifically remember having a daddy-daughter dance to attend and since my dad wasn't there, Gary offered to take me. OMG how sweet is that?! It just brings a tear to my eyes whenever I think about how awesome he was.
Excuse me while I cry all over my keyboard.
Another time I remember giving him a sticker and this must have been uncommonly known at the time, but did you know if you leave a sticker on a shirt in the dryer it won't come off? Well, I gave Gary a sticker and being the sweet man he was, he stuck it on his shirt. Only to call my mom the next day and tell her how he'd left it on there and was now a permanent reminder of me on his shirt!
Besides church functions, we spent Holidays with him, his wife and his grown step children. He was there for the women in my family when we needed someone and I am so thankful to have such great memories with him.
Do you have someone in your "old life" that you're especially thankful for?
Now it's YOUR turn to link up!
Don't forget to come back next week same day, same time and share another Holiday/Season/Thankful memory! Remember the only "rule" is your post must be a throwback post that fits the Holiday or time of year theme. Even posting stuff from last year is a throwback. Of course visiting other blogs is the point of these link ups and I've love it if you mention and/or link back here for others to join!
